Description: parents out of town, boyfriend none the wiser, house wide open like the whole setup was built for a relapse. i was already pitching a solid bulge by the time i cut my headlights and made it to the end of that long-for-no-reason driveway. staring down those oversized, grand double entry doors made a dramatic first impression.. like they were guarding something sacred. porch light glowing soft like a warning i didn’t plan to heed. every reason not to ring that bell sounding off like a silent alarms, and that gut-knotting rush of knowing i still would. i caught the weight of her steps coming quick on hardwood, measured, unbothered, right before the latch broke the silence. slow. deliberate. and there she was, leaning in for the side hug, "...hey" with that mischievous smirk. sneakers on. no damn socks. casual calm, like she forgot how much worse all them gut-wrenching nutblasts hit whenever those sweaty factory slabs have been sealed up too long, or worse, like she knew it all too well and woke up choosing spite that day. not a blink out of place either. just a look that lasted a beat too long before she stepped back, swinging the door wider, giving me space to walk in and seal my own fate. "we burned" a couple minutes out on the back deck, nothing deep. then she led the way up the hardwood stairs. family photos, framed degrees, a little nook of book spines; all that curated southern good-family polish that made the whole thing feel worse in the best way. i counted doors till we hit guest room number three. neutral bedding, a lamp glowing low, towel folded near by dropping another innuendo. she slipped onto the bed without ceremony, long legs stretching, those size 11 paddles coming to rest in that iconic crossover like a sign i’d already missed my chance to turn back. broad planks hanging off the edge, flexing in lazy ankle rolls. previews got the rest!
