Anyone who thinks that tram conductors still wear skirts during their shifts will have to look long and hard for that. at least here, it has become very, very rare. the image of women in this profession has now become more or less the same as men, even in terms of clothing. trousers and simple shoes are the order of the day. it doesn't matter whether it's during the day or at night. men and women in the railway, taxi, bus, tram or other urban public sector jobs - with the exception of secretaries, trade fair hostesses or stewardesses - all look pretty much the same. even female police officers (formerly known as traffic wardens in germany) no longer wear skirts, but that is quite understandable. ... but it's a shame, really, as far as the transport sector is concerned. here in the western hemisphere in particular, professional equality in terms of the same appearance of the sexes seems to be making rapid progress. and yet, a good fifty-five years ago here in central europe, women bus drivers and tram conductors still wore skirts. we older people here can all still remember those times vividly. even though we were still younger and still at school back then... the very first female tram drivers were here in europe in the 1920s and 1930s in the big cities of the time, such as london, paris and berlin. back then, women still wore long, wide, heavy, cumbersome skirts and coats, which were not ideal to wear in the ice and snow of winter. during the war, women in the transport sector were in demand worldwide, as almost all of the men were at the war front. after the war, it was mainly the neighboring countries, such as france, england, scandinavia, the benelux countries and the entire eastern bloc, that valued women in the transport sector very highly. in germany, it was not until the mid-1960s that women moved from the ticket booth in the rear carriage to the controls of the tram at the front. back then, it was almost a requirement that women also wore a very fine, elegant, figure-hugging, royal blue uniform jacket with a multi-braided, silver breast cord. sometimes a dark blue or black cap, held together with a large hairpin or brooch on the voluminous, varied beehive hairstyles of the time. added to this was a light blue ladies' blouse with a dark blue or black tie. the figure-hugging, knee-length pencil-style uniform skirt of the time was worn primarily in black, blue or matching light grey, as were usually the amber-coloured nylon stockings or matching tights. only very few female tram drivers at that time wore the standardised footwear with this uniform. the vast majority kept their sometimes cheeky everyday shoes, matching the skirt, even behind the levers and pedals of the tram control. and of course some extremely attractive, feminine footwear at the time was even more pointed in the form of boots, pumps and sandals, but mostly black or white, with slightly higher heels. ;) .... it could be winter or summer ... even we in school were amazed at some of the cheeky tram drivers. at least they were eye-catchers for some of them. when the miniskirt era came, the tight uniform pencil skirts of tram drivers naturally became increasingly shorter, almost to the point of being outrageous. many a passenger would get annoyed when an almost sexy, neat tram driver dressed as if in a feminine uniform in a tight nylon thigh-length miniskirt came towards us on the other side, sitting at her controls in the driver's cab and drove quickly past. in germany, you could admire women driving buses and trams until the mid-seventies, when the general uniform for women in this profession gave preference to trousers. who knows why. there were rumors that there were allegedly intrusiveness and harassment by some unpleasant contemporaries. however, by the mid-seventies, the cockpits were all lockable and mostly even had thick glass. also for the sake of driver safety. if you are still looking for women in this profession in uniform and skirts, you should pay a visit to the eastern bloc countries. in the big cities, such as the balkans or russia, and amazingly, even in siberia. there are one or two nice, neatly uniformed bus and tram drivers who still traditionally wear skirts, nylon tights, and casual or more elegant shoes. and in the same way, for all ages, sizes and figures, as it was back then here in the west. if you'd like to get a taste of what it's like, you can do a bit of searching on the world's largest video portal alongside c4s. what you used to be able to spot so easily without a camera can now be seen on video for you to watch yourself. this way you can at least get some idea of ??what it was like here in central europe back then. *** this clip is a small homage to the old days of the brave tram conductors, some of whom probably drove or were driven in a car to the night shift. how else could they have worn such delicate, thin, high-heeled women's shoes behind the tram controls and pedals in wind and weather!?
